About the project

A digital atlas of Eastern Cape heritage.

Amamfengu Heritage GIS is a community-led, indigenous-rooted mapping project preserving the heritage of the Mfengu people and the wider Eastern Cape of South Africa.

Our story

From oral history to interactive map.

Amamfengu was born from a desire to preserve the heritage and history of the Mfengu people, alongside the wider cultural geography of the Eastern Cape. Sites like Peddie, Keiskammahoek, Qonce, Mthatha and Qunu carry layered meaning that risks being lost as landscapes change.

The devastating Mthatha floods, the demolitions in Bongweni Location and the abnormal heat in Qonce also showed that heritage and climate are inseparable — you cannot plan for one without mapping the other. The Amamfengu GIS combines both: heritage mapping and climate-aware spatial planning.

We work in partnership with communities, museums, universities and NGOs to make this archive open, accessible and ever-growing.
